A PCMCIA would'nt work. You have to remember that this device is slim, just about the thickness of a PCMCIA. Remember also that the machine exists and has a fixed design. All we can add must not interfere physically. The only hardware possible is a touchscreen because it goes over the eink. What is customizable mostly, unless I'm wrong, is all the software part...and that LOGO thing!
