Word gets around fast in the workplace, people gossip, especially if someone is even slightly "different." When you work with people every day, and eat with them, dietary choices just come up naturally.

EDIT: I should add that I was a liberal, agnostic, veg in a very conservative, blue-collar establishment, so I sort of stood out.
