One of my great aunts would get the butter out about an hour before breakfast, and then put it away immediately after in case she went out, because she didn't want the butter running out to meet her!

Buttering hotel toast can be a pain. The toast will invariably arrive lukewarm, and a bit soggy, despite the toast rack; and the butter will have just been taken out of a bowl of ice cubes. End result, trying to spread the butter results in ripping the toast to shreds. At that point, I give up, lay thin slices of butter on top and then put marmalade over it . Or put the butter on my saucer next to my cup for a few moments...
