In the U.S., on average, you have a choice of delivery options and pay accordingly.
Sometimes you get free delivery, or free delivery with a minimum purchase amount, or a free delivery upgrade promotion . . .
Packages can be sent through various carriers also, who have their own delivery schedules and costs.
The main carriers are the U.S Postal Service, UPS (United Parcel Service), and FedEx (Federal Express.) You probably already know that part.
Generally speaking the lower the shipping cost, the longer the delivery time.

We have three major shipping options, DHL, UPS and Royal TNT Post (our national postal company). The first two are generally slow unless you pay extra (mostly used for international shipping), the third is fast and generally cheap.
Some shops offer free shipping charges, depending a bit on the size. But you never pay extra for next day delivery, it's part of TNT's standard service. You only pay extra for the same day delivery. I know that can be a bit more daunting in a country like the US but is usually no problem here.
Let's see, I payed €0 for that new computer bag (I need to figure out who mentioned those Weber bags, that person deserves some karma!), €6 for that Kodak digital camera and €3 (or so) for that toilet golf game... All three were delivered at the same time, one by TNT (the free one), one by UPS (the €6 one) and the third I don't know.
