Like many of you I tried all the popular sites, LibraryThing, GoodReads, Shelfari and liked aspects of each of them but none were exactly what I was looking for. LibraryThing I just didn't like the user interface and it just didn't jive with me, but I liked the recommendation aspect. Shelfari I though had a nice modern look and feel to it but the database didn't work too well and some of my books were duplicated especially books with similar names or series. Good Reads seemed pretty decent but I found I didn't use the social aspect at all. I really just was looking for a place to keep track of what I have read and possibly have it recommend new books to me.

Then I came across the LivingSocial site one day and tried it out. Everything seemed to work right i.e. all my books were easily entered in(I think I was able to import from a cvs file if I recall correctly), it has recommendations and can also merge with Facebook and pick up any of your friends who also use the service. I don't seem to have many friends who read, lol. LivingSocial also have sections for Beer(!!), Movies, TV, Video Games and some others. I haven't delved too far into the other sections yet but so far the books section has been working well for me.

Here is a link if anyone wants to check it out http://books.livingsocial.com/
