I have been thinking about Perl to avoid learning a new language.

The advantage of Python was that it could be incoporated into the standard Calibre package so that everyone could take advantage of heirarchical catalogs.

I might have a look at the state of the Server code in the 0.6 release to see if it is more easily adaptable to my requirements.
