well, la fête de la musique ("music fest") is (originally) a french thing, which has spread to other european countries ; on the first day of summer, every band in the country goes out and plays on a street corner / in a bar / park / church / boat / concert hall / etc., and it's free concerts all day long.
according to wikipedia, "
Batucada is a substyle of samba and refers to an African influenced Brazilian percussive style, usually performed by an ensemble. It is considered by some to be the epitome of the percussive ensemble. Batucada is characterized by its repetitive style and fast pace."
imagine more drummers than you can count (around 80, for the largest tonight, like i said), drumming and dancing at the same time, and then a dense crowd all around them dancing along, and the whole phenomenon progressing (very slowly, but with enthusiasm) along a street.
the percussion in paul simon's obvious child is a good example of batucada but i can't find it on youtube to embed it...

here is one playing in Salvador da Bahia (but they're not dancing or twirling their sticks in the air) :
here is a smaller but more enthusiastic one :
the ones i saw tonight were dancing like the ones in the paul simon video, but, there were 80 of them.
