I would qualify that a bit, Balok. Producing and raising children is a major reason for marriage from a social and especially a religious view. It certainly varies on an individual level however, as we can see just from the responses in this thread. And in the United States at least we've attached a lot of legal and financial rights to marriage that have made it a desirable formalization of a relationship regardless of the intent to have children.

I know I get that "oh, you're going to tell me I should have kids" look a lot from childless friends, because my wife and I have made our children a high priority. I never encourage anyone who doesn't want children to have them though - there's enough unwanted kids in the world as it is. Kids (and parents!) need all the advantages they can get, why limit them from the start by bringing them into a home where they're not particularly wanted?
