Hi demonfairy and welcome to MR

I'm sorry to hear about your problems--I hope an ebook reader will be some comfort to you.

I have a Kindle 1 and really don't know how I got along without it! There are many helpful--and opinionated (I mean that in the best way )--people on MR so I'm confident that you'll get lots of good advice. Here's my 2 cents: since you mentioned money, I think you might get more bang for your buck with a Sony 505 than a Kindle. Don't get me wrong, I love my Kindle and think there are some great things about it that other readers don't have (namely Whispernet)--but the e-ink screen in a Sony is identical to the e-ink screen in a Kindle. I recently saw a promotion for a 505 from, was it Best Buy?, for USD 199.

Good luck and happy reading!
