The biggest problem with 'rules' is not the rule itself but the people who interpret them. Somehow I really doubt that when the original airport security rules were drawn up that the drafters were worried about crochet hooks or pocket nail clippers.

Checking out a laptop computer makes sense to me. There is room enough for a sizable amount of explosives and/or bioweapon material, and certainly the electronics to make it go boom or whoosh. Same with an e-book reader. The inside of my in-the-ear hearing aids don't.

As I said before, I prefer that they err on the side of caution. The extra 15 seconds shouldn't be a problem for anyone who plans well. However, it would be swell if they could raise the standards required for the position of security guard just a wee little bit.
