I almost started to provide info on how to recognize such a scam. Unfortunately, people would then find that info and apply it to their next scam. So I'll just say, if it was sent to you unsolicited through e-mail, and they don't reference an agency AND ID information that you recognize (like Monster.com job #x or account #y), forget it. If they do, contact them through that agency.
Right, and I have found out about scams a couple of times by calling. Not the number on the email! Look up the bank or whatever in the phone book and call them directly.

One day last year, we got a letter in the mail with a check for a small amount, something like $400. Since we were not expecting money, I called the bank that the check was written on. Sure enough, it was a scam. The check was stolen, and all of the bouncing checks were just to harrass the company from whom they were stolen. In other words, if I had deposited it, it would have overdrawn the company's bank account if it got past security. It was simple harrassment using stolen company checks and stationary, so that the company was having to deal with the bad checks all day. It's still in a file at home, don't know why I'm keeping it.
