If you absolutely insist on having your files named nnnnn.azw, then a simple rename of the file will suffice. (Note that I've also done the reverse and renamed a DRM-free .azw file to .prc so that I could read it on my Blackberry.)
As far as software goes, Mobipocket Reader, Mobipocket Creator, Calibre, BookDesigner, and Stanza can all emit Mobipocket files compatible with the Kindle. There are also some programs around that will explode a Mobipocket file into html + images so that you can create another eBook format or otherwise utilize the "book" on some other device.

Thanks! However, I submit that Stanza does such a POOR job of converting to Kindle or Stanza as to make them unreadable! (As if I *really* wanted each and EVERY chapter to have the book title and author info embedded within!
