For me, yes, the DR1000S was absolutely the right choice to make - I am delighted with it. I don't use it for that, but I would imagine it would be excellent for academic work, with its excellent PDF rendering and ability to rapidly flip between multiple documents.

Yes, it's comparatively expensive (but still a lot cheaper than a tablet PC) and for some the battery life might be an issue, but for me it's exactly what I was looking for in a large-screen bookreader.
