Amazon sells books primarily in a special DRMed MOBI format called AZW. They occassionally sell books in a slower, less-readable, custom font format called Topaz (AZW1 or TPZ). You can't easily tell in advance if you're getting a MOBI or TPZ book. The Kindle also reads non-DRM MOBI and TXT files without conversion. Amazon does not sell PDF files.
