If someone believes in astrology, I might mock that opinion*. But people can believe the strangest things without it affecting their judgement on other matters — which is why I wouldn't mock the person, just the opinion.

I've no doubt that some of my opinions are completely erroneous. The problem being, of course, that it's impossible for me to be sure which ones....

A reasoned argument is usually more useful than mockery, but I feel that sometimes showing someone how silly they're being in an amusing way (well, amusing to me) can work where logical argument might not.
