The cake the lovely Nobelwoman--wrongfully shamed by the proverb day in and day out--referred to was a type of sweet bread that the rich generally purchased *instead* of regular bread. However, French law mandated that if a French baker was out of regular bread, it had to sell this more expensive type of bread at regular bread price.
Making the historical quote a good few steps less clueless than it is generally held to be.
Please somebody more knowledge correct me on any of the specifics... but I do believe I have the general outline correct in the above description.
