I think this was the first fantasy series my mother read (she still has my hardback of book 1 and won't give it back). She grabbed up all his books she could find (said this one was "ok", not as good as first), but she gave up part way thru Shannara (didn't finish it, dumped the books).
By then, of course, I'd read them all and moved on, but I agree this series is much better.
