I sure DO remember those statements from school.

Oh, how gullible we were.

When getting paid hourly at a previous job I regularly worked an average of 12 hours a day and some Saturdays. During some special project times I'd work from 7 am till 1 am that night (or the following morning) and be back at work at 7 am again (back in the younger days, of course.) But at least I would get paid overtime, even if I never got a vacation.

The first salaried job I ever had, I regularly worked from 12 to 14 hours a day for about 9 years and usually at least 1 Saturday a month with the promise that I could get another day off in it's place. That NEVER happened.

Now I usually only work about 9-10 hours a day and hardly ever a Saturday.

Being salaried usually means you still get paid when you're out sick, etc., although you don't get paid any overtime. But I've NEVER been one to take time off, ot take many (hardly any) vacation days, so when you figure it all out, hourly pay works out to be much lower and the employer definitely gets the better part of the deal overall.

But I can't complain. I AM employed and I like my job AND my employer(s).

Life is basically good.

Still, I'd love to do the 4-day work week. Somehow, the older you get, the more precious your time is. And I never seem to get enough of it.
