Well, to define it as a problem is maybe overdoing it.

Perhaps you are saying you were disappointed in his lack of creativity? Or do you really mean you actually have a problem with it? Authors do have their bad days. We can't expect everyone of their utterances to be so eloquent ;-) Or you do?
