That's cause it "fixes" the bad URL you typed. You can turn that off if you want also. (Turn domain guessing off).

But I also usually use the search bar, I hit Alt-K, type something in then type Alt-Enter to open the search in a new tab.
What I don't like about the search bar is that it searches in the selected thing or doesn't set it back. For example, I want my "default" search to be Google. But sometimes I want to search on amazon or wikipedia... just for that one search. I want to be able to choose the provider and have it search it. But, then I want it to set it back to my default search. Neither firefox or IE work this way, and I never "get" why.
