There was a programme recently on the BBC called '10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight'.

I think they advised against waiting till you're hungry to eat, because you end up eating more.

They did an interesting experiment. Gave one group of people a chicken and rice meal, washed down with a glass of water - another group the same, only blended into a soup. Examining their stomachs over the next few hours showed the soup eaters stayed fuller longer. So one tip was to blendersie your meals.

Other tips were eating low-fat dairy products helps excrete fat - so that was good; and protein foods stave off hunger because they tigger the 'I'm full' hormone in your brain.
