If you turn it on (in the settings menu) - it is automatic.
It doesn't last 16 hours - forget it

The one they have not added yet is the long term mode that becomes the replacement for shutting the device down. Ideally, this is the mode that you'd want it to be in if you're not reading for 2-3 hours.
