Why use the companion software?

Can anyone explain what the companion software is actually for? When I run it, it just looks like a not terribly good "File Manager", except that it's obviously doing something wierd with my internet connection, because I can't access any web sites while it's running .

Is there any reason not to copy files directly to the mounted drive in Windows Explorer, rather than use the companion software?

Apologies if I'm missing something blindingly obvious. I've only read the first few pages of the manual so far.
