There were two power saving modes planned for the DR1000. The first is just to extend the battery usage slightly by putting it into a low power mode in between page turns or brief pauses (which is the one that has been implemented).
The one they have not added yet is the long term mode that becomes the replacement for shutting the device down. Ideally, this is the mode that you'd want it to be in if you're not reading for 2-3 hours.
