I disagree. Rowling didn't fool anyone, yet her books are among the most popular ever written. It's not about fooling readers, it's about writing an interesting and entertaining story. In this regard, I think Simmons succeeds with "Hyperion". You are free to disagree, of course, but there's no point in "scientifically" trying to justify what is essentially just an opinion.
