There are also lots of free modern books; many publishers offer freebies as short-term promotional gimmicks, and some authors have free ebook versions of their works. There's not as many as the public domain works, but it's possible to fill a Reader, and keep it filled, with free contemporary professional-quality literature.

The NYTimes bestsellers generally won't be there, but there are a lot of good, free, current ebooks. (And sometimes, NY Times bestsellers may be there--Doctorow's Little Brother is available for free in several ebook formats.)
