It is continued in the Requiem for Homo Sapiens trilogy (starts with The Broken God).

The Shadow of the Torturer is the starting book of Gene Wolfe's New Sun cycle (5 books).

Other contemporary sci-fi I recommend is anything by Alastair Reynolds. Very realistic good space-opera.
For fantasy: Brandon Sanderson and Joe Abercrombie are my favorites.
