Your memory may be deceiving you. It took several years for Apple to roll out the iTunes store internationally. Initially it was US-only.

The situation for music is generally rather more straightforward than it is for books. The big record companies operate world-wide, and have world-wide distribution rights. The issue for books is that book publishing and distribution contracts are very often country-specific. Many books, for example, have different US and UK publishers.
