Did that with my old Sony Ericsson phone.
To minimize my bandwidth usage, I made a Firefox Portable folder which had graphics, Java and Flash disabled, and Adblock Plus installed. Only had EDGE/GPRS, though, and even with pure text, it was almost unbearably slow.
