Of course the "u" in university is pronounced more like "you" than the "uh" of the "u" in umbrella. Therefore university has an implied consonant at the beginning of the word. HarryT probably knows a word for this too.
The Cyrillic has a letter for these sounds - yah, yeh, you (separate from ah, eh, ou) - which makes the phonetics easier.
