If you aren't interested in what the people most likely to buy your books have to say, maybe you should look for a contract with one of the mainstream publishers, where it's expected that authors don't have any contact with their readers and don't listen to customer feedback.

I think you are wrong there. First, I don't think any of you would buy my wife's book and I wouldn't want you to. Second, She already has a contract with a mainstream publisher. Third, If mainstream authors didn't listen or read what their fans say or write, then why do they set up webpages specifically for that purpose.
Like I said a book is a book is a book. a hardback book is different from a paperback book. You wouldn't even attempt to xerox a whole 300 or 400 page book to copy it, hence, no copy protection. With the advent of digital computers, and their ability to make a flawless digital copy of a file, everyone wants to copy them. I can't blame the publishers or the authors for wanting copy protection it's just a logical extension of the copyright laws. Thank goodness, The people who make our laws and the justice departments that enforce them are with me on this. If you don't believe this., be warned. There will always be DRM and there will always be pirates who try to circumvent it. This will just lead to more and better DRM and the process continues ad infintum. Nothing any group of consumers do is going to change this. You are wasting your time.
