My iMac is a few years old and my Kindle 1 seemed to have a lot of trouble with it all the time. Basically what you're describing.
I have no idea if this is relevant, but is it connected directly to the Mac or are you using a hub? Mine was always going through a hub, and I never thought to try it otherwise.
Kindle 2 doesn't seem to have the problem, though.
