Hi all,
I'm the developer of ClickBook, a free EPUB reader for reading books in a language you are still learning. Tap any word you don't know and a small panel explains what it means in that sentence, with an example, so you can stay in the book instead of switching to a dictionary.
The iPhone and iPad version works a little differently from Android, so here is what is specific to it:
- The language model (a quantised Gemma 4 E2B, run with llama.cpp) ships inside the app. Nothing is downloaded at first launch, and it works offline, airplane mode included, from the very first start
- The trade-off: the app is large in the App Store (the model alone is about 1.84 GB), and it needs an A12 Bionic chip or newer with iOS / iPadOS 15.1 or later
- Open EPUBs from Files or iCloud Drive, or a PDF with real text (converted on import; scanned PDFs can't be read)
- On iPad you can read one page at a time or as a two-page spread
- Free, no account, no ads, no tracking. Your books and lookups stay on the device; the only exception is the optional Ask ChatGPT button (Pro), which sends a word and its passage only when you tap it, and asks first
Pro is a one-time in-app purchase of US$12.99 (local prices vary), not a subscription. It adds explanations in your own language and passage translation. No DRM-protected books, so Apple Books and Kindle purchases won't open.
