This builds on a lot of other people's work, so I wanted to give credits where they're due:
Credits and sources
Please tell me if I've credited anything wrongly:
- Ying Stokes (thorondir): the original hotspot.koplugin.
- abrahamnm and contributors: filesync.koplugin.
- The KOReader team, especially NiLuJe: the Kindle/Kobo/PocketBook platform code the research reads from, plus KindleTool and koxtoolchain.
- shuvashish76 and NiLuJe diagnosed the MediaTek "reboot on first Wi-Fi" problem (koreader#13197). winterwurzel wrote the WMT-daemon fix the plugin uses on MediaTek Kobos (koreader#16222).
- unrealJune: Quick Share/Nearby Share Plugin for KoReader and kindshare, the first working hostapd SoftAP on a Kindle that I know of (Voyage, stock ath6kl). Its notes are the best Kindle reference we have: WPA2 is required, AR6003 needs 11g without HT/WMM, and it covers wifid and firewall handling.
- zampierilucas: the MediaTek Kindle system dump in kindle-ble-hid, which showed the same Wi-Fi modules as the Libra Colour, and the per-model data in kindle-hid-passthrough.
- katadelos: the linux-3.0.35-lab126 mirror of Amazon's GPL kernel (ath6kl compat-wireless, wario defconfig), and the firmware-loading notes in K5 Can't get self-compiled ar6003 module to work.
- bdm310: PW3 Kindle Paperwhite 3 Schematics and Mainline u-boot/Linux (AR6003 on upstream ath6kl, board-data file).
- Bergfux and rahuldhebri: Kindle Basic 8th-gen serial boot logs that show the bcmdhd driver and firmware (post #392 and a 2021 log in the serial-console thread).
- knc1: Managing the Kindle firewall. morinew: restarting wifid via upstart in Disable connectivity check / connect to "island" WiFi.
- liquidguru (PW6 notes), SolAstrius (kexec-kindle-mt8512), abhaymettu (omarchy-kindle) and gdamjan (PW2 dump): MediaTek and Atheros Kindle details.
- PocketBook for publishing their GPL kernels (kernel-b288, kernel-b300), and karabek for xradio.
- reMarkable (brcmfmac-firmware, linux-imx-rm), the remarkable.guide authors, and dkyates79 (KOReader on rM Paper Pro Move).
- bosa (the NickelTiles thread, with a Tolino Shine 5 running Kobo Clara BW firmware) and iluuuk (KOReader running on BQ/Fnac devices).
- Outside e-readers: RaspAP, the SoMLabs wiki (bcmdhd AP on the same Murata module as the Broadcom Kindles), Digi's ConnectCore 6 docs, and the Linux ath6kl/brcmfmac developers and linux-firmware maintainers.
The full list (about 130 sources, each with what it supports and how to re-check it) is in
sources.md. Jailbreak and root methods are deliberately left out of the report and of this post; please use the existing threads for those.
