As you know, software version 4.x is the only version currently supported by NickelMenu at this time, and my mods are the same.
Now here's the good news: I've been able to get preliminary versions of these working, and I'm currently looking for testers who are interested in trying out these mods on their Kobos running software version 5.18/6.0. (I'm currently testing on my Kobo Clara Colour.)
Once I'm sufficiently happy about the stability of NickelMenu, I also plan on making an official PR to make sure the official release of NickelMenu also supports this new software version.
I've updated the mods for v6.0 now:

This version of the mods aren't persistent, which means you'll need to reinstall them after system updates. I'm looking into what's possible. For now, you will need to reinstall these after an automatic/OTA update.

So I'm on the Oct 5th build, but this nickelmenu worked for me. I can launch KOReader, everything seems normal (except the charging light stayed on, finally turned if off in KOReader). Anything I should look out for?
I had a bunch of other shortcuts in Nickelmenu, like going to Google Drive, but it crashed and rebooted. So I'm hesitant to try any others for now.
Forgot to mention I'm on Kobo Libra Colour
