Perhaps embracing an experimentalist approach would be something to look at. Instead of asking, give it a try and see how it works. Open a sample ePub, add an embedded font. Try reading it on a Kobo ereader as an kepub.

I did try it before I asked. It didn't work. That's why I'm asking. If it does work, I don't have the code to do so. I only have the CSS code for ePub via RMSDK.
