So final update. Turns out, I bought a Shokz bone conduction bluetooth headset. Apparently, this headset, after some period of time, completely shuts down its bluetooth, so when you power the Era on, it starts up with bluetooth disabled.

So hitting the play button before/as you turn on the Era, the reader finds the headset, and bluetooth works as expected.
