Generally, the serial number is on the bottom or the right hand edge but check all 4 edges. You should see something like S/N:N236 and then the remainder of the serial number. On all the Kobos I've looked at, the serial number looks as if it has been engraved not printed.

If nothing else, try the Aura E2 V2 image. It won't hurt the device. If you have tried both, then it's very likely to be a hardware issue and beyond economic repair.
