Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what is going on with my Kobo Aura Edition 2 N236 V1. I've tried quite a few things by now and I'm stuck.

The Kobo originally stopped booting properly and was stuck on the multilingual “Restoring / Réinitialisation / Wiederherstellen…” screen with the five empty progress blocks.
Now it's still stuck on that screen, but it doesn't respond to the power-button at all. All I see is the “Restoring / Réinitialisation / Wiederherstellen…” screen and five empty blocks.

What I've done so far:

Opened the Kobo and removed the internal 8 GB microSD card.
I had already formatted the original 8 GB card in Windows before I realised that wasn't necessary.
I received/downloaded the Kobo N236 Aura Edition 2 V1 image from this forum (Kobo_N236_Aura_E2_V1 / Aura_Edition2.img).
I checked the serial number: (IG)60QL2C0187..., so the 7th character is 0, which as I understand it confirms that this is a V1 and therefore the V1 image should be correct.
Flashed Aura_Edition2.img to the original 8 GB microSD using balenaEtcher. Flashing and validation completed successfully.
Put the card back in the Kobo. It did not boot and the display remained on the same Restoring screen.
Because I suspected the original 8 GB card might be failing, I tried a different 32 GB microSD card.
After some initial problems with Etcher, I successfully flashed and validated the same V1 image to the 32 GB card.
With the 32 GB card installed, Windows has at times detected the Kobo and mounted KOBOeReader. The visible FAT32 partition was about 3.1 GB with about 47 MB used. It contained .kobo and .kobo-images; inside .kobo were kepub, slideshow and koboreader.sqlite.
At other times Windows only makes the USB connection sound but does not mount KOBOeReader. Once Windows also reported that the USB device had malfunctioned / could not be recognised.
Without an SD card installed, Windows does not detect anything.

I've also tried the manual reset/power procedures multiple times: holding the power button for 20–30+ seconds, releasing it, waiting, powering it on again, doing this both connected and disconnected from USB power, etc. At one point holding the power button caused the mounted E:/F: drives to disappear, so the Kobo does seem to respond to the power button.

The display, however, never changes from the multilingual Restoring screen. I know e-ink can retain the last image even when the device is actually off, so I'm not sure whether the restore process is really running or whether it is failing before the screen gets refreshed.

I've also left it connected to a known-good charger for a couple of hours, with no visible change.

So at this point I have:

confirmed N236 V1
used the V1 SD image
successfully flashed and validated it
tried two different microSD cards (8 GB and 32 GB)
tried the various long-press/manual-reset procedures
confirmed that USB sometimes gets far enough to expose the KOBOeReader partition

but the Kobo still never gets past/updates the Restoring screen.

Does anyone have an idea what I should check next? Could this still be a boot/SD issue, or am I now more likely looking at a battery, display connection, or other hardware problem?
