First of all, thank you rantanplan and JSWolf for taking the time to read about NickelAI and share concrete feedback.
Your comments about the 20-request preview, transparency around the AI model, and subscription fatigue led me to reconsider the next step.
NickelAI now has an optional BYOK mode. Readers who already have an API key can configure Gemini, OpenAI, or Anthropic from a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer while the Kobo is connected by USB.
The key is stored locally on the reader, and Nickel’s built-in browser contacts the selected provider directly. It is not sent to or stored by the NickelAI backend, and no personal Vercel deployment or NickelAI subscription is required.
Gemini has now been tested end-to-end on the original 2012 Kobo Glo, with a fast response. The OpenAI and Anthropic adapters are included for community validation on additional devices.
The simple hosted preview remains available: new users still receive 20 explanations without needing to know what an API key is.
I have also added clearer information about the AI model and personal-key options to the project documentation.
Thanks again — this is exactly the kind of practical feedback an early hardware beta needs.
