It's not an absolute must, of course, but it was a nice convenience being able to preload it into the opf of a template then fill in the individual value as needed. That way it travels with the individual copy of the ePub rather than being Calibre only. I used to do all the editing directly in the opf, but then the meta editor grew to be nice to use and I've gotten spoiled. So long as the data line isn't actively purged (which I really-really thought I'd seen happen, and will need to keep an eye for), it'll just be part of the list of favorite things that are lost.
