And some devices just can not be recovered even if you are willing to spend a lot more money than anyone is likely to do.
One of my co-workers purchased a Microsoft Zune 16 in late 2008 as a Christmas present for themselves. Bounce ahead to summer, 2010 and their Zune died. No local repair possible and one site that said they could possibly repair it wanted a non-refundable deposit that amounted to $125US (compared to the new price of the Zune 16 at $160US) plus the co-worker got to pay for shipping both ways.
