My first US passport costs $35, the last one was $75. All were good for 10 years.

Back in the 1980s when I was in Saudi Arabia, they collected your return plane ticket and passport (mine was held by a Captain in the Saudi Navy) and issued you an ID card. When you were scheduled to leave they exchanged your ID card for your plane ticket and passport.

I remember one flight out was via a week in London. We arrived and the Customs agent sat back in his booth and waved us all by saying that there was nothing we could bring from Saudi that the British were worried about.
