I have a partial fix, which led me down a rabbit hole of minor changes. If it can tell there is a newer version of a downloaded book, it will show a little icon. on the book cover and in the book details. It will have an update button.

I'm going to see if I can force a single book to update. I'm not sure if that'll work though.
