I've also recently acquired an InkPad 4, and installed KOReader on it. I agree that there's a lot to it. I also find it rather unintuitive. However, I think that it's worth persevering a bit. Once you've got the default layout (font, margins, line spacing, status bar etc.) set to your liking, using it is as straightforward as the stock reader.
