Most of my failed cables had braid. It's a gimmick if the plug cover part isn't done properly.
Some expensive brands are very cheaply made & poor quality.
My UK Kobo Touch had a perfectly standard micro USB port.
All of my ereaders have standard mini, micro or USB-C that is only USB 2.0.
"Good quality" seems to be by the fact it lasts rather than specific brand. Hoco braided cables are worse than CEX branded plain / unbraided.
