1.Open Settings:Open the main Settings app on your Pixel device.
2.Navigate to Apps:Tap on Apps, then tap See all apps to view your complete list of installed applications.
3.Select the Current App:Locate and tap the app that is currently opening your EPUB files (for example, Google Play Books, Kindle, or another dedicated reader).
4.Clear Defaults:This removes the existing file association without deleting any app data..Scroll down and tap Open by default. Then, tap the Clear default preferences (or Clear defaults) button.

Key insight: After clearing the defaults, simply go back to your file manager and tap on your EPUB file. The system will recognize that no default app is assigned and the "Open with" menu will reappear. Select your new preferred reading app and tap Always to lock it in.
Interesting but doesn't work.

I selected librera while in a file manager, indicated it should always open epubs and yes...in the file manager it seemed to work. Then switched to LibriLink and it continued to select Slides, with librera in the list but no means to select it as default. Trying a different reading app made no difference.

It's worth noting that if I use Calibre Sync with no default app set in Android it displays a much shorter list of apps, and correctly handles the default app setting.

Makes me think there are multiple Android APIs to launch a file and Calibre Sync and LibriLink have made different choices.
