Mark Twain (pseudonym for Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (30. november 1835 i Florida, Missouri, USA – 21. april 1910 på "Stormfield House", Redding, Connecticut, USA) var en amerikansk forfatter og humorist, bedst kendt for Tom Sawyer og Huckleberry Finn og sine utallige humoristiske noveller.

Om bogen
David Wilson er en ung sagfører, som har slået sig ned i en lille amerikansk by, hvor han på grund af sin originale optræden hurtigt er blevet til grin og har fået øgenavet "Fjolle-Wilson". Bl.a. har han den pudsige vane at samle på fingeraftryk på glasplader, og han er derved efterhånden blevet i stand til at identificere så at sige alle den lille bys indbyggere. Og denne passion skaffer ham til sidst en glimrende oprejsning under den mordsag, der udgør bogens afslutning.

Selv om det ikke i sit udgangspunkt er en humoristisk roman, så fornægter Twain sig ikke, og benytter lejligheden til bl.a. at satirisere en over de sære udslag, racepolitikken i datidens USA gav sig – så som at en af udseende helt hvid mand automatisk er slave, fordi én af hans tipoldefædre var det.
