I don't even see ads on the internet unless somehow one of the pop ups gets past my filter.

I read a study? where it showed that people really do overlook ads. They did a test on the US Census Bureru website where they asked the users to tell them what the population of the United States is and more than half the people had to go to google to find the answer because they didn't see it on the front page because they'd made the population information into this big red font and most people just didn't see it. We've been trained already to ignore what's not important on a website.

I mostly read this because it does affect webdesign. Basically don't make your important information look like an advertisement and you're good to go.
