Nor can I do the power button plus down button thing to get it into USB downloader mode which seems to be a pre-requisite for any possible fix.
I can get the Kindle to be recognized by my PC and navigate through the kindle directory tree on the computer, but I haven't been able to figure out if there is anyway to force a hard reboot or a factory reset from the PC without pressing buttons on the kindle itself. Holding down the power button on the Kindle for 40 seconds just causes the diagnostics screen to disappear for a couple of seconds then reappear.
I'm pretty sure the best answer is 'buy a new kindle', but just thought I'd check before adding to landfill.

I doubt that there's anything to be done. Bear in mind that from 20th May Amazon are dropping support for this Kindle model (& all others from 2012 and earlier). So
(a) There will be lots of second-hand ones shortly!
(b) You might want to take up Amazon's offer of a discount and some book money.
(c) You might want to jump ship to a different reader.
I can't see that there's any point in spending money on this one because of (a). And if you do a factory reset after 20th May you won't be able to register it with Amazon.
